Shared Parental Leave: Could you qualify?

Shared parental leave was introduced to give working parents more choice and flexibility in how they care for their children during the first year after their birth or adoption. The new regime means to create a framework that better supports modern working families. Parents can share the 52 weeks’ leave and potentially receive payment for 39 of those weeks, dependant on eligibility.

In order to qualify, you or your partner  must be eligible for maternity pay or leave, adoption pay or leave or maternity allowance. SPL is for couples rather than single parents and couples must share responsibility for the child. Parents can split the 52 weeks leave in any combination that suits them, however adequate notice must be given to the respective employers and leave must be booked in blocks in advance.
