Statutory Sick Pay Changes

5th May 2026

The start of a new tax year normally brings a few changes and there are numerous changes to the Statutory sick pay (SSP) rules.

The rate of SSP is changing to £123.25 or 80% of the employee’s average weekly earnings (AWE) whichever is lower.

HMRC are changing the Employment rights Act 2025 regarding SSP from the 6th April 2026. The waiting days are being removed, so employees will be entitled to SSP from day 1 and payable to all employees, including those who are paid under the Lower earnings limit. The period of Incapacity to work (PIW) is being reduced to 1 day.

The maximum duration of Statutory sick pay is still 28 weeks.
