HMRC deadline now, effectively, 28-Feb-22

6th January 2022

Due to the continuing difficulties that Covid continues to present, today HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have announced they are waiving late filing and late payment penalties for Self Assessment taxpayers for one month – giving extra time, if needed, to complete your 2020 to 2021 tax return and pay any tax due.

HMRC has announced that they will not charge:

1.    late filing penalties for those who file online by 28 February 2022
2.    late payment penalties for those who pay the tax due in full or set up a payment plan by 1 April 2022.

Interest will be payable from 1 February, as usual, so it is still better to pay on time if possible.

The related tax enquiry window will also be extended.
