2025 ICAEW Annual Farming Conference

3rd October 2025

On Thursday 25th September, members of our farming group were deep in thought whilst attending the ICAEW Annual Farming Conference; the theme of the day being ‘Farming in an Uncertain Landscape.’

There were a variety of speakers on the day, and the virtual event provided a wide platform for professionals within the industry to contemplate the key issues facing agriculture and rural economies.

Unsurprisingly, the theme was particularly apt. The undertones of lost confidence in government support schemes and tax reliefs, coupled with moving goalposts on environmental policies, showed the muted enthusiasm in the sector of late. All that before we even consider the increasingly volatile weather and commodity prices.

What always amazes me, however, is that despite all the hurdles farmers still want to farm. They still get up everyday and go and milk the cows or tend the land. Whilst the farming landscape presently is not ideal, I am a firm believer that there are opportunities in every difficulty.

From our professional perspective, what has been a great side effect of the IHT announcements back in October 2024, is how engaging farmers and farming families have been in getting advice from their accountants and solicitors, and hopefully with our help we can get them into a position where the farm is viable for generations to come.
