VAT Direct Debits – Cancelled?

Having received a copy of a letter a client has received from HMRC today, it states that due to inactivity on your VAT account your direct debit instruction has expired. If you wish to pay by Direct Debit in the future you will have to complete another Direct Debit instruction, either online or by post. With a payment due to go out early next week, our client was more than concerned!


After speaking with HMRC, they admitted that a series of bulk letters have been sent to clients in error and Direct Debit instructions are still active for a number of clients.


If you have received such a letter, it would be worth ringing the HMRC VAT helpline (0300 200 3700) to confirm your situation.
