Funding Opportunities for Farmers

9th July 2025

Farmers have received subsidies for a considerable amount of time, with roots tracing back to the post-World War II era, but with the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) ceasing in 2027 and the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) being paused for new applications, at the time of writing, it is crucial that all elements of grants and funding opportunities for farmers are explored.

There are various grants and funding opportunities available, generally all with the same underlying themes to improve or enhance nature, the environment or productivity with the view to assist the government in meeting their net zero carbon targets.

Here are a few examples:

  • Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (FETF)
  • Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL)
  • The Farming Innovation Programme (FIP)
  • Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier & Capital Grants
  • Woodland Creation Planning Grant

Whilst these all serve to help farmers and landowners with funding, and should be considered if relevant, our clients have had particular success with the FETF. This gives funding for equipment, technology and small infrastructure to boost productivity, improve slurry management and enhance animal health and welfare. Grants are available from £1,000 – £25,000.

If you started but didn’t submit your SFI application before the closure of the scheme on 11 March, you may be eligible to apply. There is a six week window to make your application, but you can only submit one application per business, up to a maximum of £9,300 and cannot add more land to rotational actions.
