Why did you choose an apprenticeship with Whitings LLP?

‘I joined Whitings as an apprentice at the start of November 2023 after deciding that more traditional education routes didn’t suit me. Since joining I have gained so much practical experience and have progressed through the AAT studies all the way to Level 4.’

What is a day in the life of an apprentice at Whitings LLP like?

‘On a day-to-day basis, my work involves preparing VAT returns and year-end accounts for clients of all sizes. I also get to use a variety of accounting software, such as Xero and CCH, which has helped me strengthen my technical skills massively. As I have progressed through the apprenticeship, the work has become more complex and challenging, allowing me to continuously challenge myself and improve.’

What do you like most about your apprenticeship?

‘One of the best aspects of my apprenticeship is the level of support I receive at work. Managers and senior members of staff regularly take the time to sit down with me, offer guidance, and answer any questions I may have, not only for work related questions, but also for any questions I may have about studying. This has helped me lot’s as it allows me to try new tasks and take on new responsibilities, knowing someone will be there to help should I need it.’

Are there any challenges when studying for an apprenticeship?

‘There are a lot of challenges that come with the apprenticeship alongside all of the benefits, such as studying for exams through the busier periods of work and meeting deadlines and targets on the more challenging work. However, if at any point I have felt stressed or worried about work, I have always been given support to help me manage this from colleagues.’

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?

‘Overall, I think the apprenticeship is a really good path for anyone looking to get into accountancy, giving you the opportunity to progress through your qualifications, while gaining real world experience and earning at the same time!’
