5-Oct: Self-Assessment Registration Deadline

9th September 2024

There’s just under one month to go until the HMRC Self-Assessment registration deadline (5 October 2024) for the 23/24 tax year.

You’ll need to apply if you need to complete a tax return and have not sent one before, or did not send one last year.

If you are not sure if you need to file a self-assessment return, did you, between 6 April 2023 and 5 April 2024:

  • Commence working for yourself as a sole-trader or in a partnership
  • Receive income from land and property
  • Receive income exceeding £150,000
  • Receive untaxed income i.e. dividends or bank interest
  • Receive income over £50,000 and you or your partner get Child Benefit payments
  • Have Capital Gains Tax to pay

HMRC also have a questionnaire that only takes a few minutes to complete, and will check whether any of your income or gains will require you to submit a return, based on the details you provide: https://www.gov.uk/check-if-you-need-tax-return

The following link provides more information on how to register: Check how to register for Self Assessment – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Late filing of a self-assessment tax return will result in an automatic £100 penalty.
