Time to Take Action: Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax
6th July 2026
The first quarter for Making Tax Digital has ended and it is time to make that first submission. The first quarter ending 30th June/ 5th July 2026 has ended now and your first submission is due to be submitted to HMRC by 7th August 2026.
Do I need to make a submission?
If you had rental or business income in excess of £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year, then you need to be MTD for IT compliant and make your first quarterly submission by 7th August 2026.
Do I need to sign up?
If you had qualifying turnover above £50,000 in 2024/25 and you haven’t already done so, it is important that you sign up for MTD for IT as soon as possible. You can do so using the following link: Sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax – GOV.UK. Should you prefer, Whitings LLP can complete this process for you. Please speak to your Whitings LLP contact to organise this.
Do I need digital software?
Yes, to make submissions to HMRC you need compatible digital software, such as Xero. This software helps digitalise your bookkeeping process which is much more efficient. The software then pulls together the reports for MTD for IT which can then be submitted directly to HMRC. Whitings LLP can help with the set up of digital software and offer training to our clients who use Xero. Click here to see the benefits of using Cloud Software.
Do I run my first quarter to 30th June or 5th July 2026?
If you currently have year end accounts prepared to 31st March each year, or are VAT registered and make submissions for month end dates, then we would recommend that your quarter dates are amended to run to 30th June, 30th September, 31st December and 31st March. The submission deadline date will remain the same, the 7th of the following month.
It is important that you make this decision in your first quarter, as once the first submission is made you must run with these dates for the whole year. Please discuss this with your Whitings LLP contact if you are unsure of which quarter ends to run with.
Do I need to tell HMRC if I am exempt?
There are certain exemptions you must inform HMRC about, if they apply to you. Click here to find out who is exempt from Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and whether you need to inform HMRC.
