Self Assessment Scams

19th March 2024

Beware of Self Assessment scams!

More than 11.5 million tax returns have been submitted for the 2022/23 tax year and fraudsters are focusing on these.

Taxpayers have reported to be receiving emails, phone calls or text messages offering a tax rebate. These are phishing scams and are designed to use your personal details for selling on to criminals or to access your bank account.

Don’t fall for it!

HMRC will not email, text or phone a customer to inform you of a refund or ask you to request a refund.

You will receive your repayment into your chosen bank account or via cheque. This can be checked through your online HMRC account or the HMRC app.

Taxpayers can help fight phishing scams by reporting any suspicious communication to HMRC:
  • forward emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
  • report tax scam phone calls to HMRC on GOV.UK
  • forward suspicious texts claiming to be from HMRC to 60599
