Self Assessment Scams Warning!

13th January 2025

Unfortunately it is the time of year that we must remind everyone to beware of Self Assessment scams.

HMRC have provided guidance with examples of phishing emails, suspicious phone calls and texts that you may receive. Click here to find out more.

Please don’t fall for these!

HMRC will not email, text or phone a customer to inform you of a refund or ask you to request a refund. You will receive your repayment into your chosen bank account or via cheque. This can be checked through your online HMRC account or the HMRC app.

Taxpayers can help to fight phishing scams by reporting any suspicious communication to HMRC by:
  • Forwarding emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
  • Reporting tax scam phone calls using HMRC’s online form
  • Forwarding suspicious texts claiming to be from HMRC to 60599 (These will be charged at your network rate)
  • Reporting suspicious HMRC-related social media accounts or messages to HMRC’s security team security.custcon@hmrc.gov.uk.

Click here for more information on how to report suspicious communications to HMRC.
