Ransomware advice for charities

9th June 2017

Many organisations across 150 countries, including our own NHS, have been hit by a recent ransomware attack. The vulnerabilities  exploited by the hackers are the same for charities, individuals and public or private sector businesses.

The Charity Commission is encouraging charities to follow protection advice released by the City of London Police and the National Cyber Security Centre:

  • Install system updates on all of your devices as soon as they are available
  • Install anti-virus software on all of your devices and ensure it is kept updated
  • Create regular backups of your data to a device which is not connected to your network
  • Do not follow any demands or pay a ransom (which may be requested via Bitcoins – a form of digital currency)

If you think that your charity has become a victim of a cyber-attack, you should report it to Action Fraud – the UK’s reporting centre for fraud and cyber-crime – by calling 0300 123 2040. The service is run by the City of London Police who work with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau to ensure that fraud reports reach the right place.
