HMRC or not HMRC? – That is the question

26th October 2018

Following a conversation with HM Revenue and Customs this morning we have been made aware that an unknown person has gained access to one of HMRC’s outgoing phone lines and is making hoax calls from this number.

HMRC will always have a record of any calls made to an individual detailing the department trying to contact you.

If you receive a call from HMRC in the coming days, even from a legitimate number, then please speak to your accountants before giving them any information.

As phishing emails and phone calls are becoming more common and increasingly more sophisticated it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the most common examples. You can find a publication by HMRC on this matter here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/phishing-and-bogus-emails-hm-revenue-and-customs-examples

Please contact our offices if you wish to discuss this further https://www.whitingsllp.co.uk/about-us/contact-us/
