Charities: Public Trust Reaches 10 Year High

22nd August 2024

Charity regulator The Charities Commission has published research showing that public trust in charities across England and Wales has reached a ten-year high.

According to the research, the two most important things the public are interested in when it comes to charities are:
  • Where the charity spends spend their money; and
  • That the charity is achieving it’s aims and purpose, and is operating ethically

It also shows that there is a declining percentage of people donating to charities, in contrast to those receiving services from charities which has increased.

How a Charity Accountant Can Help

Accountants can support public trust in charities, for example by:
  • Being an independent professional to look over the results;
  • Perform an independent exam to ensure the accounts are in line with the underlying books and records;
  • Perform an audit to ensure the accounts are true and fair; and
  • Follow the Charity Commission whistleblowing guidance in instances of matters occurring that we are required to report
