Aaron Malkin, Trainee ACA/ICAEW Accounts Technician at our March office has shared how he finds studying for an apprenticeship at Whitings LLP.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship in Accountancy?

‘An apprenticeship had always appealed to me since I was in school. Accountancy stood out due to my liking of working with numbers and the qualifications available within an apprenticeship. I like that that I can work in a professional environment whilst also gaining valuable qualifications.’

What does a day in the life of an apprentice at Whitings LLP look like?

‘Day-to-day work for me includes bookkeeping, preparing VAT returns and producing management and year-end accounts. I have a nice mix of clients that I work on weekly and ones that I will only work on once a year. As I progress with exams, this reflects in my work, and it is rewarding to feel like I am using knowledge gained from college in my work.’

Are there any challenges that you have found whilst studying?

‘Studying whilst working can be intense around exam time but a good balance of revising and working is achievable. Whitings are very supportive offering a study day for each exam and flexible working as well as regular performance reviews with my training provider. There are multiple pathways through exams and exams progressively getting more challenging. In my case, I have completed AAT and have now progressed onto ACA.’

What skills have you gained whilst studying as an apprentice?

‘Since starting my apprenticeship three years ago, I have grown a lot of skills including communication, problem-solving and time-management. A lot of this has been down to the combination of studying whilst working. The real-life experience gained whilst progressing through qualifications is the biggest aspect of an apprenticeship.’

Why would you recommend an apprenticeship?

‘Accountancy offers clear career progression with a number of future pathways and specialisms available later down the line and I am looking forward to where my apprenticeship takes me.’
