2021/22 Self Assessment Unpaid Tax & surcharges

2021/22 Self Assessment Unpaid Tax and surcharges 28th February 2023

If you cannot pay your Self Assessment tax bill that was due for payment on 31st January 2023 and need help you should contact HMRC as soon as possible.

For Self Assessment, you may be able to set up a payment plan online. This will enable you to pay your Self Assessment tax bill in instalments without contacting HMRC.

You can set up a payment plan to spread the cost of your latest Self Assessment bill online without calling HMRC if:
  • you owe £30,000 or less
  • you do not have any other payment plans or debts with HMRC
  • your tax returns are up to date
  • it’s less than 60 days after the payment deadline

Alternatively call the Payment Support Service on 0300 200 3835

The deadline for this arrangement ends 31st March 2023 so don’t delay.

To add interest will continue to accrue on any unpaid tax and the current late payment interest rates that HMRC currently charges are 6.5% from 21 February 2023.

Furthermore if you delay paying your tax by:

30 days — you’ll have to pay a 5% surcharge of the tax you owe at that date. DEADLINE IS 3RD MARCH 2023

6 months — you’ll have to pay a further penalty of 5% of the tax you owe at that date.

12 months — you’ll have to pay a further penalty of 5% of the tax you owe at that date.

If you require any assistance with your tax affairs, then please call one of our offices or speak to your usual contact at Whitings.
